The article in Friday's (Jan. 28) {\it Daily} about the
Supreme Court decision on minority setasides in Richmond Virginia
contains the following two paragraphs.
``By contrast, Jennifer Bryson, president of the College Republicans,
hailed Monday's ruling as `a step toward the America that Martin
Luther King Jr. envisioned, an America that is not based on race
distinctions'.
Asst. Dean of Student Affairs Keith Archuletta responded, `It is
typical for the right wing to co-opt the words of the Civil Rights
movement as it destroys everything that the Civil Rights movement
and Martin Luther King stand for. It's an insult to black people
and to the intelligence of all democratically-minded people'.''
Dean Archuletta's statement raises some questions.
1. Was he speaking just for himself or for the Deanery of Student
Affairs? He didn't make that clear, or else the {\it Daily} didn't
print the disclaimer.
2. Given the University's policy on ``racial insults'', is he asserting,
either on his own behalf or the University's, that Miss Bryson's
statement violates the ``Fundamental Standard''? It would be
going rather far in the direction of Stanford abandoning
the nonpartisanship of its charter to take that view of a statement
in support of a Supreme Court decision.
3. Should Miss Bryson or someone else in the College Republicans
be charged with some future violation of university regulations
in an excess of right wing enthusiasm, will Dean Archuletta
excuse himself from any body involved in judging the matter? If
he doesn't, a court is likely to throw out any punishment---as a
court just did in the {\it Dartmouth Review} case.

John McCarthy
